Playing Length
Wrong length moves the strike, changes your posture, and quietly undoes everything else on the card.
Measured with a 60-degree ruler from the heel of the sole to the butt cap, with the club sitting at its playing lie. This is the single most consequential number on the card and the one most often wrong straight out of a box.
Too long and the strike migrates toward the heel, the club sits upright at address, and the golfer stands further from the ball than their posture wants. Too short does less damage but costs speed and encourages an early extension.
The reason it goes wrong so often is that stock length assumes an average that fewer than half of golfers actually match. Wrist-to-floor sets the starting figure; the face tape settles the argument.
The angle between the shaft and the ground when the sole sits flat. It is measured on the bending machine, and its effect is checked with tape on a hard lie board: a mark toward the toe means the club is too flat for you, a heel mark means too upright.
Every degree of error pushes the start direction by roughly two to four yards on a mid-iron shot, in the opposite direction to what most golfers assume. It is also the spec that drifts fastest, because bending happens every time a forged head meets a mat hard.
We gauge the loft of every iron and wedge rather than trusting the number stamped on the sole, which is a design intent rather than a measurement. Tolerances of a degree either way leave the factory routinely, and a set can arrive with two clubs three degrees apart and the next pair five degrees apart.
What matters is the ladder: consistent steps from club to club so the yardage gaps are even. Uneven lofts are the usual explanation for the club that "goes nowhere" and the one that "goes too far".
Grams, weighed on the gram scale, and far more informative than a flex letter. Mass governs how much effort a swing costs and how much the club tells your hands. It is the first spec we change for a golfer who has lost speed and the first one we check on a set that feels unwieldy.
A move from 115-gram steel to 75-gram graphite through the irons is not a small adjustment. It changes total club mass, swingweight, and the tempo the club encourages, which is exactly why it belongs on paper.
Cycles per minute, taken on the analyser with the club clamped at the grip. It is a measured stiffness figure, which is more than any flex letter offers. Two shafts both stamped "regular" can sit fifteen cycles apart, which is roughly a full flex.
Frequency is most useful across a set. A smooth slope from the long irons down to the wedges means the clubs feel related; a set assembled from mixed stock often has a step or a reversal in the middle that the golfer feels as one club being odd.
Swingweight is a balance reading on the D-scale, and it describes how head-heavy a club feels rather than how much it weighs. Total mass is the honest number in grams. Both go on the card because they answer different complaints.
"This feels heavy to carry through the round" is a total mass problem. "I cannot feel where the head is" is usually swingweight. Golfers who have lost strength often need total mass down while swingweight stays put, which is only achievable if you are tracking both.
Three pieces of information: which grip, what core diameter it was made in, and how many layers of tape sit underneath. The last one is the cheapest meaningful spec change available to any golfer, and it is almost never recorded anywhere.
Hand span and glove size set the target. A grip that is too small encourages excessive hand action; too large mutes it. Building up with tape lets us hit a diameter between two stock sizes instead of forcing a jump.
