Hybrid Sessions

A hybrid only earns its slot if it beats both of its neighbours. That is a measurable claim, so we measure it rather than assuming it.

The Bridge

Between the Iron You Trust and the Wood You Like

Long irons ask for speed and a shallow angle of attack. Fairway woods ask for a clean lie and a sweeping strike. Between those two demands sits a hole that a lot of golfers fall into somewhere around 190 yards.

The hybrid exists to fill it, and the fit is mostly about restraint: keep the length short enough that the club behaves like an iron, keep the mass close to the iron set so the transition is not jarring, and pick a loft that lands in the actual gap rather than a nominal one.

Where seniors are concerned this is often the highest-value single club in the bag, because it replaces the two clubs that stopped working first.

Fitting Rules

Four Things We Get Wrong If We Rush

Hybrids are sold as a shortcut and fitted as an afterthought more often than any other club. These are the mistakes we watch for.

RULE 01

Build It Short

Stock hybrid lengths are set for maximum carry. Half an inch shorter usually costs two yards and buys a great deal of control from a poor lie.

RULE 02

Match the Irons, Not the Woods

The club is replacing an iron and gets swung like one. Shaft mass close to your iron shafts keeps the transition invisible.

RULE 03

Check the Lie Angle

Hybrids get bent far less often than irons and drift just as much. A hybrid two degrees upright pulls exactly like an iron would.

RULE 04

Test From a Bad Lie

Anyone can hit a hybrid off a tee. The turf strip and a semi-rough mat tell you whether it works when it matters.

Two or More

When the Answer Is a Pair

Golfers with declining speed frequently need two hybrids rather than one, replacing the 4- and 5-irons together. The trap is buying them a year apart from different ranges, ending up with two clubs a yard apart in carry and forty grams apart in shaft mass.

If your card shows a wide hole at the top of the set, we will say so and spec both clubs in the same session even if you only buy one now. The second one then matches when you get to it.

Bring
your long irons too

We cannot measure the gap without the clubs on either side of it.

Fill the Hole at the Top of Your Bag

Bring the long irons you avoid and the wood you rely on. The gap between them is the whole session.
